Authorities have taken a suspect into custody following a homicide investigation in Zeeland Township that began on New Year’s Day and ultimately stretched across state lines.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), deputies conducted a welfare check on the night of Jan. 1 at a residence located in the 200 block of Patti Place. Inside the home, they discovered 63-year-old Donna Hyma deceased. Officials later determined that her death was suspicious and said it was caused by asphyxiation.
The case quickly shifted from a welfare check to a full homicide investigation as detectives worked to piece together the circumstances surrounding Hyma’s death. During the early stages of the inquiry, investigators learned that Randall Grinwis, identified as Hyma’s boyfriend, could not be located.
Deputies explained that Grinwis was “nowhere to be found” following the discovery of Hyma’s body. As the investigation progressed, authorities determined that he had allegedly taken items from Hyma’s home and fled the state. Law enforcement officials traced him to Las Vegas, Nevada, the Holland Sentinel reported.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says it worked in coordination with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to locate and apprehend Grinwis. He was arrested on Feb. 9 in Las Vegas without incident.
Following his arrest, Grinwis was extradited to Michigan to face charges in Ottawa County. He was formally arraigned on Thursday in connection with the homicide investigation. A judge denied bond, meaning he will remain in custody as the case proceeds through the court system.
Officials have not yet released additional details regarding a possible motive or the specific charges filed, but the investigation remains active. Authorities indicated that detectives continue to review evidence and gather information related to the case.
The death of Donna Hyma has left the local community shaken, particularly given the circumstances under which she was discovered. Law enforcement officials are urging anyone who may have information relevant to the case to come forward.
